Sima Rangju was a descendant of Tian Wan. During the reign of Duke Jing of Qi, the state of Jin attacked A and Zhen while Yan invaded the territories along the river. Qi's armies suffered a crushing defeat. Duke Jing grew deeply worried. Yan Ying recommended Tian Rangju, saying, "Although Rangju is a branch of the Tian clan, he has the civil virtue to win over the people and the military skill to intimidate enemies. I urge Your Grace to give him a trial." Duke Jing summoned Rangju and discussed military affairs with him, finding him most impressive. He appointed him General and put him in command of the forces defending against the Yan and Jin armies.

Rangju said, "I have always been of low and humble birth. Your Grace has elevated me from the ranks of commoners to a position above the ministers. The soldiers have not yet become attached to me, and the people do not yet trust me. A person of little standing has little authority. I ask that Your Grace's favored minister—one whom the state holds in respect—be appointed as Supervising Commissar. Only then can I proceed."
Rangju thereupon knocked down the marker, stopped the water clock, entered the camp, drew up the troops, and restated all regulations. Having established the orders, by evening Zhuang Jia finally arrived.
