Zhang Liang

张良

The Strategist Behind Two Empires

An aristocrat who attempted to assassinate the First Emperor with a hammer, then became an advisor serving two masters—and watched them destroy each other.

Zhang Liang hailed from the noble lineage of the state of Han. In his youth, he hired an assassin and hurled a 120-jin iron hammer at the passing carriage of the First Emperor—a deed immortalized in the legend of "one hammer that shook the world." He fled and lived in seclusion. Later, he met Liu Bang at Xiapei and recognized in him a man of destiny, becoming his most trusted strategist. At the Hongmen Banquet, Zhang Liang arranged for his friend Xiang Bo to warn Liu Bang, thereby saving his life. Zhang Liang served both Xiang Yu and Liu Bang—offering strategic counsel that Xiang Yu repeatedly ignored, while Liu Bang heeded every word. His final advice to Xiang Yu went unheeded. Xiang Yu perished. Liu Bang emerged victorious. Zhang Liang was granted the title of Marquis of Liu—and then quietly withdrew, vanishing from history at the zenith of his power. No one knows where he went. His final act was as enigmatic as his first.
